    Ex-mayors Jeffery Jones, Joey Torres join crowded race for the Paterson's top seat

    PATERSON — Former mayors Jeffery Jones and Joey Torres have joined the growing field of possible candidates running for Paterson’s top job in next spring’s election.

    By early Friday afternoon, eight possible candidates had picked up nominating petitions for mayor, including two council members under indictment in a pending election fraud case, Michael Jackson and Alex Mendez.

    Jones had gone to the city clerk’s office on Friday seeking nominating petitions for both the mayor and council-at-large elections, but officials told him he could have only one.

    He ended up taking a packet for the mayor’s race.

    “I’m not having that conversation now,” Jones said when a reporter asked him at City Hall if he were definitely planning to run for mayor.

    “There are just too many stupid things going on for me to sit back,” Jones added.
