Ida Minerva Tarbell (November 5, – January 6, ) was a teacher, an author and journalist. She was known as one of the leading "muckrakers" of her day, work known in modern times as "investigative journalism." She wrote many notable magazine series and biographies.
She is best-known for her book The History of the Standard Oil Company, which was listed number five among the top works of twentieth-century American journalism by the New York Times in Her writing on the oil industry led to the break-up of Standard Oil and to the passing of antitrust laws in the United States of America.
Tarbell also wrote several books for women, and supported the peace movement after World War I.
